An excerpt
Chapter one
It was midnight. Maybe around 2 a.m. The owls cried from the trees. The bushes rustled with rats. Aside from that, everything was silent. And there was Zoey, standing at the edge of a cliff.
She'd been running. Not from danger, but from pain.
Earlier that evening, around 6 p.m., her brother had called the house, their mother had collapsed in her sleep and wouldn’t wake up. She was gone. Zoey sat in stillness for six long hours. Grief pressed against her chest like a wall. Questions spiraled through her mind like wildfire. How would I survive now? How would I cope?
By the time her mind broke down, her legs had joined in. She ran. For two hours. Until her feet stopped at the very edge of that cliff, the same park her mom used to bring her to as a child. Standing there, staring into the dark abyss, it all became real.
And then, a tap. A firm hand gripped her shoulder. Sirens echoed in the distance. “Are you Miss Zoey Manchester?” the officer asked.
Then she heard it, her brother’s voice breaking through the night. “Zoey! Thank God we found you!”
That is where the story begins. The thinking continues every week in the writing.
